The Iowa Bicycle Coalition is encouraging cyclists to participate with students, teachers, and parents to help fight the obesity epidemic by walking to school on the October 3rd Walk to School Day. Walking or bicycling to school is any easy way to promote physical activity and help reduce the prevalence of obesity. Schools across Iowa will be hosting events. October 3rd, 2012 is the official International Walk to School Day.
The 2012 goal is for over 100 schools to participate by hosting a Walk To School Day event. Last year, 72 Iowa schools registered at www.walkbiketoschool.org. Cyclists are encouraged to visit the website to check if their neighborhood schools are participating.
Participating in Walk to School Day introduces children to the physical, social, and environmental benefits of walking or biking to school, increases school spirit and fosters a sense of community. Registration is easy and an event can be planned in less than seven days! Assistance from the Iowa Safe Routes to School Program and the Iowa Bicycle Coalition is also available.
