A bill has been introduced to require motorists to yield to persons on bicycles in crosswalks in the Iowa House.  The bill had three sponsors, Rep. Gerhold, Rep. Bush, and Rep. Bradley, and has been referred to the Iowa House Transportation Committee.

Currently, Iowa law only requires motorists to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks. This bill would add persons on bicycles to the law.  Communities are building more bikeways and trails that involve crosswalks making this legislation even more important.

From 2010 to 2020 there were 2,034 crashes in marked or unmarked crosswalks.  Of those crashes, there were 13 fatalities and 175 serious injuries.
