Gov. Terry Branstad’s public schedule released today includes mention of a more rigorous activity than a press conference where the sweat is induced by TV lights and persistent questions: Branstad will ride RAGBRAI starting a 7 a.m. Tuesday.

That day’s ride will wind from Perry to Des Moines and (weather pending) could become the single biggest day of mass bicycling in Iowa.

The last time he rode all of The Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa, Branstad said Thursday night at the opening of a new exhibit dedicated to the ride at the State Historical Museum, was in 1988. And the last time RAGBRAI visited Des Moines, in 1997, Branstad also occupied Terrace Hill.

“We’ve been 16 years building up to this moment on Tuesday,” RAGBRAI Director T.J. Juskiewicz said at the exhibit opening.

No other details of Branstad’s planned ride were immediately available.
