The bicycling community is shocked and saddened by another death on Iowa’s roads. Gerald Williams of Lenox was struck by a car and killed on a rural stretch of roadway near Lenox. Reported details of the crash are limited, but the Iowa State Patrol is reporting a hit-and-run, but have identified the vehicle. No arrests or charges have been made at the time of the report.

The Iowa Bicycle Coalition calls upon law enforcement for a fair and thorough investigation with appropriate charges. This is the first fatal crash in 2013 involving a bicyclists. Fatal crashes have been on a decline over the past three years.

Drivers are reminded to be on the lookout for bicyclists at all times. The Iowa Code allows bicyclists the same rights and duties as other vehicles. This means that bicyclists are allowed to use roadways in the same fashion as other vehicles.

If a motorist is involved in a crash, the motorist should render aid to the victims and remain on the scene until public safety arrives.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Gerald Williams.
