FAIRFIELD, Ia. – More than 2,000 people gathered in Fairfield Friday evening to do one shared activity: wear fake mustaches.
The city was trying to break the world record for the most people donning the false facial hair, and organizers think they succeeded.
They didn’t break the goal of 4,000, but Terry Davis said more than two thousand people turned out.
“I think we broke the record,” she said. “But Guiness has the final say.”
The current record is 1,534 people.
Liz Russell and Richard Aten both participated. They are from Florida and pedaling across the state on RAGBRAI. A family friend they are staying with told them about the event.
“It was a little different,” Russell said. “We didn’t even know about it before.”
But both said they enjoyed it.
Event organizers had decided to take advantage of the RAGBRAI crowds – and play off their slogan of “Hold on to your handlebars” – but several local residents came out as well.
“We came out to enjoy RAGBRAI,” said Jolene Wimmer.
“And to break the record,” added Doug House.
