Westgate, Ia. — Pete Renss from Rochester, Minn., scurried into the library here and asked the librarian behind the counter to sign his white T-shirt.
The librarian isn’t a celebrity. But Renss is a member of Team Sign Me. Each of eight riders has spent the week scouring the towns and farms along the RAGBRAI route for the signatures of certain categories of people.
They try to find a banker, a doctor, a lawyer, a librarian, riders from different states and nations, and so on.
Renss brought seven white T-shirts to RAGBRAI, one for each day, with his team name scrawled on the back.
Believe it or not, about a dozen riders have signed his T-shirt while biking alongside him.
He lucked out while inside the library: Ferris Wharton, a superior court judge (fulfilling the required attorney signature) from Delaware on his 22nd RAGBRAI with the Blue Hens, sat nearby. Renss handed him the marker.
Some days on RAGBRAI it feels like every possible goofy angle on a team has been dreamed up after 42 years.
