By 10 a.m. today, hundreds of riders had whizzed through Valley Junction — the approximate 40-mile mark of a 50-mile day — where dozens of vendors had set up in the streets with enticing food, beverages and entertainment.

Meanwhile fourth-year RAGBRAI rider Barney Barnhart, of Wala Wala, Wash. sat in front of Green Grounds Cafe sipping an Americano. We took the opportunity to learn a bit about the secret to getting a rider to stop and get off his or her bike while passing through a town.

For Barnhart, and who knows how many others, a frozen Snickers bar is irresistible. And surprisingly, so far he’s snagged one from street vendors on day one and two of the great race. Good coffee and eggs are also crucial in the morning.

Currently Barnhart remains on the hunt for a frozen Snickers bar as he heads to Water Works Park. Make us proud Des Moines.
