WAVERLY–Some riders are packing up early after storms rolled into Waverly overnight.
“Why not leave early when it’s cold and wet,” said Ann Marie Buatti, of Iowa City.
Buatti and three others were curled beneath a small awning with a pile of gear outside Waverly-Shell Rock Middle School at 7:30 a.m. They planned to ride until Independence, but are now headed home this morning.
Others who stayed in tents biked on into steady rains and rolling thunder in the distance.
“This is all part of RAGBRAI,” said Rick Walton, of Iowa City.
Walton said a bolt of lightning and simultaneous thunder clap woke him around 3 a.m. in his tent.
“I could feel the compression in my chest,” he said. “I curled up in the fetal position.”
He said the worst of the storm seemed to pass over by 4:30 a.m.
