Help us meet our match: www.iowabicyclecoalition.org/match
Who would have guessed that the number one Trek retailer in the nation would have started as a humble hardware store in 1902? This is Scheels’ story and today there are twenty-seven stores nationwide, with four stores in Iowa (Cedar Falls, Sioux City, Iowa City, and Des Moines); each developed as a store within a store concept. Every location has its own bike retailer space, bike repair staff and shop.
Customer service is a key pillar of the Scheels mindset and for 2020, Scheels has been selected by Newsweek as the top sporting goods retailer for customer service. There is an extensive level of training at each store, and in each department, employees are trained weekly in their area of expertise.
Matt Phippen, the sales leader from the Iowa City store, spoke to us on behalf of the four locations about why all four of their Iowa stores are joining our Retailer Challenge Match to support the Iowa Bicycle Coalition:
“Partnering with the Iowa Bicycle Coalition helps to get more people on bikes,” he observed.
“Because the Coalition supports and advocates for funds to build new trails, fights for the rights of every cyclist and is the biggest advocate of cycling in Iowa, the Iowa Bicycle Coalition is an organization that we want to support and get behind.”
He goes on to say, “We will continue to partner with the Iowa Bicycle Coalition to support cycling advocacy in Iowa.”
In each of their communities, Scheels is known for its local advocacy, including helping to fund trail grooming equipment in Cedar Falls and dedicating dollars for bike trails through the Iowa City store. Additionally, each Scheels is employee-owned.
We asked Matt the best thing about being in the bike business and he noted “Everyone remembers their first bicycle and for many, this first bike turns into a lifelong passion.”
All of our statewide retailers play an important role in safe, enjoyable, bicycling for all in Iowa. We need their support, their voice, and the support of their customers to help continue to create better policies for cyclists, generate more funding for bicycling infrastructure, and build a community of cyclists.
Thank you, Scheels for supporting Iowa bicycling and helping us meet our match.
