Over the last year, Iowa Safe Routes to School has been collaborating with Northwest Iowa Planning & Development Commission to improve biking and walking safety for kids Lyon, Sioux, Osceola, O’Brien, Dickinson, Clay, Buena Vista, Emmet, and Palo Alto. During the past year, the bulk of the work has focused on Spirit Lake and Spencer. However, NWIPDC and Iowa Safe Routes to School would love to work with your school, organization, or community.

Most recently Iowa Safe Routes to School teamed up to host a safety day at the Spencer YMCA. Originally, the plan was to host a bike rodeo in the parking Y parking lot. However, with a heavy chance of rain the entire day we decided to turn lemons into lemonade and teach the kids about helmets, hand signals, and the ABCs “s of biking.

Iowa Safe Routes to School can’t wait to get back to Spencer and host a bike rodeo for the community.

At the end of the day, Iowa Safe Routes to School helped educate eighty kids at the Spencer YMCA. We want to thank the Spencer YMCA, NWIPDC, Spencer Police Department, and everyone else on the Spencer Safe Routes to School Committee.

Iowa Safe Routes to School is funded by the Iowa Bicycle Coalition and the Iowa Department of Transportation. Our goal is to help educate Iowa’s youth how to safely walk and bike to school.
