Thunderstorms expected to form in northwest Iowa this afternoon will probably affect tonight’s overnight stop in Oskaloosa and Friday’s ride to Fairfield, meteorologists said.

Tonight, thunderstorms should move through central Iowa during the mid-evening hours, perhaps reaching Oskaloosa around 9 p.m., said meteorologist Frank Boksa with the National Weather Service in Johnston.

There is a risk of severe weather. Boksa said hail and strong wind gusts would be the biggest threats.

“It’ll be kind of lingering in the Oskaloosa area” into the early morning hours, Boksa said.

Rain is likely to continue Friday morning as RAGBRAI moves south and east toward Fairfield.

“Right now the forecast has rain going on in the morning,” said Brian Pierce, a meteorologist at the weather service’s Quad Cities office.

Any storms during the day Friday will probably be weak, Pierce said.
