Here’s a quick primer about today’s 69-mile ride from Rock Valley to Okoboji:
WEATHER: The first leg of RAGBRAI will be warm, but very typical for July in Iowa, says Ed Wilson of Des Moines’ WHO-HD. It will be mostly sunny and humid. Starting temperatures will be in the upper 60s. Expect south winds around 10 to 20 mph. By the afternoon hours highs will reach the upper 80s. It will feel like 93 by 4 p.m.
TONIGHT’S ENTERTAINMENT: Flashmob, Hairball (5:30 p.m.) at Arnolds Park Amusement Park.
THE SIGHTS: Here’s a brief selection of the things you’ll encounter today:
RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES: Before taking off, get into the swing of outdoor festivities by camping, fishing, hiking, bicycling or canoeing at Rivers Bend in Rock Valley. The campground also recently added a 12-hole rotary disc golf course.
SWINE TOWN: Once riders roll into Boyden, they won’t find anything that “boars” them. The town, located in the largest pork producing county in Iowa is providing pigs in blankets and breakfast burritos in Centennial Park.
GREAT LAKES: Okoboji and the Iowa Great Lakes area are hosting RAGBRAI for the first time overnight and will provide a variety of amusements. In the Arnolds Park Amusement Park, cyclists will find the 13th-oldest wooden roller coaster in the world, Legend Roller Coaster.
