The Cedar Rapids Parks & Recreation Department is pleased to announce the reopening of the Sac and Fox Trail. This is the first time in the last few seasons that the trail has been fully open due to the sewer project and spring floods. Parks Operations’ construction crews have completed spring flood damage repairs. In addition, Public Works Engineering contractors have completed the first phase of the sewer project that improved and elevated a segment of the trail just north of Mount Vernon Road.
With the completion of the connection from the Sac and Fox Trail to the Prairie Park Fishery, trail users may now enjoy a wide variety of amenities including fishing, eagle watching, and visiting the Indian Creek Nature Center with its surrounding prairies and educational opportunities. The 1.7 mile Loop Trail at Prairie Park Fishery with ADA access to the parking lot, fishing stations and scenic overlook serves as an excellent Blue Zone’s Healthy Living Site. Parks staff will groom the entire Sac and Fox Trail this winter for cross-country skiers and will plow snow from the Prairie Park Fishery parking lot and the Loop Trail for year-round access. Cross-country ski trails are opened, marked and groomed when they are completely covered with snow. Call the Winter Sports Hotline, (319) 286-5700, for trail openings and conditions.
