73-year-old man sails along through RAGBRAI

Okoboji, Iowa — At 73 years old, Arlo VanDiest of Webster City still zooms across Iowa for RAGBRAI with his trusty 30-year-old Fuji road bike.

VanDiest, who was ridden RAGBRAI 10 times previously, enjoys the speed and the variety of people he meets on the week-long ride.

“It’s always a joy to be able to do it, especially when you’re 73,” VanDiest said.

VanDiest is riding with a group of 40-year-olds.

“I’ve actually passed quite a few people,” VanDiest said.

Here’s the thing about hanging with a younger crowd, though:

“I was riding along with them in a loud musical bus,” VanDiest said.
