Would you believe there is a law on the books that require you to take a knowledge exam to ride a bicycle in two Iowa cities? Or every bicycle ridden must have a bell in two other cities? These laws exist in many cities across Iowa.
The Iowa Bicycle Coalition is working to repeal these laws AND add improvements such as:
- Change lanes to pass bicycles.
- Door zone protection.
- Yield to bikes in crosswalks.
- Repeal mandatory sidepath ordinances.
- And many more updates.
I need your help in reviewing the laws that we want to see repealed. We created a survey that you can review the laws we are targeting and give your comments. This survey takes less than 5 minutes.

There are 270 cities with local bike ordinances in Iowa and this will take some time and work. This effort will require a lot of resources to travel to the communities and time to organize local advocates. Please consider supporting this work to improve local bike ordinances.
