Tips for Bike Friendly Employers
1. Educate your employees about the benefits of bicycle commuting
* Offer lunch and learn workshops to inform employees about the benefits of bicycle commuting, plans for how to begin a bicycle commute, bicycle maintenance, and bicycle safety.
2. Offer parking for bicyclists
* Install bike racks, lockers, or allow cyclists to bring their bikes inside the building to store near their workplace.
3. Offer Shower Facilities
* Install showers if your business doesn't already have them, or work with local fitness centers to offer shower-only or discounted memberships
4. Create a Bicycle Commuter Incentive Program
* Offer incentives to employees who pledge to Bike to Work such as reimbursement for bicycle or biking accessory purchases
5. Create a “Guaranteed Ride Home” program
* Have a guaranteed ride or reimbursement of cab fair if a bicycle commuter has some sort of emergency or can't ride home because of bad weather
6. Create a Bike-Buddy Program
* Encourage employees to commute with each other by offering ads to find fellow bicyclists that live nearby
7. Participate in Bike to Work Week
* Encourage your employees to register and have your own events planned to be involved. Offer incentives to employees who participate.
8. Help new commuters come up with routes
* Use local maps to help new commuters come up with a good route to work. The route for a bike is usually much different than the route for a car so keep that in mind.
9. Offer unique incentive programs
* Donate a certain amount to charities for each mile employees ride on their bikes
10. Promote Bicycle commuting by becoming a bicycle commuter
* Encourage employees to follow your example when you start your commuting
