Linn County Share The Road Sign Project
Submitted by iowabicycle on Mon, 12/14/2009 - 09:35
There is a new project to erect Share The Road signs throughout Linn County. Cyclists and motorists alike would prefer wider pavement on county roads, but Linn County Supervisors are unable to budget for that expense at this time. Educating and reminding all road users that bicycles are legal vehicles for transportation and recreation is our goal. Increasing safely for cyclists is also a goal. Erecting Share The Road signs seemed like a good starting point.
After numerous emails, meetings, and face to face conversations, an agreement was reached for the project. Ordinary citizens will voluntarily donate funds to purchase Share The Road signs at $250 each. Steve Gannon of the Secondary Roads department will coordinate purchase of signs from the Anamosa Penitentiary and oversee erecting the signs throughout Linn County once the ground thaws in the spring of 2010. Placement of signs is up to us, the donors, with Gannon's approval. Linda Langston, Linn County Supervisor, has agreed the county will maintain the signs after installation. We are not limited to the number of signs that can be placed. Donors should indicate a preference for sign locations if they have one. Gravel roads are also a possibility if someone sees a need.
One sign consists of two parts: The top diamond with bicycle image and the lower rectangle with SHARE THE ROAD. $250 gets us one sign and installation by Linn County road crew to their specifications. Donations in any amount are accepted. Personal checks can be made to
Linn County Trails Association, LCTA, with a notation of Share the Road sign fund. There is no on-line mechanism for donating at this time. LCTA is a nonprofit organization and your donation is considered tax deductible. For this initial phase, LCTA will receive checks through the end of March. At the end of each winter month, I will take donations for the month to Steve Gannon and we will decide placement of signs dependent on how many signs are funded. As soon as the ground is soft enough, you will see Share The Road signs on popular cycling routes. Please consider donating in any amount.
HBA members should contribute by using the form available through www.hawkeyebike.org because HBA will match their donations.
Send checks to:
Linn County Trails Association (LCTA)
PO Box 2681
Cedar Rapids, IA 52406-2681
Specify: Share The Road signs. LCTA is also raising funds at this time to extend paving on the Cedar Valley Trail north to LaFayette
