Sioux City Transit Rolls Out Bike Racks on Buses
Submitted by iowabicycle on Thu, 12/03/2009 - 22:42
Sioux City Transit which serves the Sioux City metro area, including Bicycle Friendly Community, South Sioux City, Nebraska, will install bike racks on its entire 22 bus fleet thanks to a partnering arrangement with Siouxland Trails Foundation. The racks were recently received and will be installed by Transit maintenance staff over the winter with an official roll out in early spring 2010.
Siouxland Trails Foundation and Sioux City Transit agreed to each pay one-half of the cost of purchasing the racks. Siouxland Trails Foundation, in turn, partnered with Siouxland Cyclists and the City of South Sioux City to raise one half of its share and matching these partners' gifts with proceeds from the 2009 Tri-State Trails Tour bicyle ride.
The daunting initial estimated cost of outfitting the entire bus fleet with bicycle racks was reduced substantially when Sioux City Transit managers found a source for high quality used racks. Once the fleet is fully outfitted with bike racks, Sioux City Transit has committed to ordering all replacement busses already fitted with racks.
This successful project continues Siouxland Trails Foundations tradition of leveraging private funds with local public entities to improve trail opportunities and access to trails in the greater Siouxland region.
