Amish Harvest Tour to Cure Cancer 2009
The 2009 Amish Tour to Cure Cancer Bike Ride (the Courage Ride), is this Saturday, September 26. Ride lengths include 20/40/60/100. Registration and Dad's Belgian Waffle breakfast start at 6am. Staggered start beginning at 8am; 100 at 7am. Events start at the Iowa Mennonite School (18 miles west of downtown Iowa City).
The Courage Ride, in honor of Seth A. Bailey, raises money for cancer research. In four years, the ride has raised over $170,000. Currently, all money raised stays local at the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
In November 1995, seventeen-year-old Seth Bailey was passionate about sports. A junior at Iowa Mennonite School, he was surprised when a sore leg turned into something serious. A diagnosis of soft-tissue Synovial Sarcoma (a more rare form of cancer) came as a shock to all who knew Seth. After a valiant fight, he died in 2003 at age 25. This ride was organized as a tribute to Seth and to others who have been diagnosed with cancer.
The Courage Ride is organized by the Bailey Family and the Bicyclists of Iowa City (BIC). BIC is a member of the Iowa Bicycle Coalition. We appreciate the commitment that BIC has to our broader community. It is heartening when bicycling becomes the means to help others.
