Dear RAGBRAI Nation:
Steve Van Deest of Waterloo is my favorite RAGBRAIer of all-time.
He courageously pushed himself to finish each day of RAGBRAI despite his many challenges. I looked forward to seeing my friend Steve and his family each day. No one ever passed him (yes, they would typically be riding pretty slow!) and wasn’t inspired by his determination.
He has been riding his “custom” hand-cycle tandem bike for many years on RAGBRAI with his loving sister Carla pedaling behind him. Occasionally other family members would ride with him as well. Steve hasn’t been on RAGBRAI (on his bike at least) for the past few years due to heath issues that have kept him away. He admitted he would have not enjoyed the 105 degree temps last year!
Steve’s family contacted me about sharing his recent plight and asked me to spread the word to the many friends they have met over the years on RAGBRAI.
If you can share a word of encouragement for Steve or help him out, I know Steve and his family would appreciate hearing from his RAGBRAI family!
