2010-2015 Iowa Bicycle Crash Data


1. Cassandra Rieken of Monticello was killed at 4 p.m. Wednesday, March 8, 2017.  The 8-year-old child was riding a tricycle eastbound on West Washington Street and collided with the front of a minivan traveling south on South Cedar Street.

2. Franklin Dahn, 70, was riding his bicycle around 1:30 p.m. on June 30, 2017 down a hill in the 2300 block of Sugar Bottom Road when he struck an animal and crashed.  Dahn was flown to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and later died from his injuries.

3. A 13-year-old bicyclist was killed by the driver of a vehicle at the 6600 block of Merle Hay Road at approximately 5:58 p.m. on Tuesday, August 29. Police say the victim is Ali Hashim, a student at Johnston Middle School. The driver of the vehicle has been confirmed as 36-year-old Matthew Scott Nielsen of Granger.

4. A 13-year-old Emmetsburg, Iowa, boy was killed while riding his bike on July 25 by the driver of a semi. Police say a semi was traveling west on Highway 18, and was turning onto Monroe Street. Officers say 13-year-old Colby Sandbulte was riding his bike on a sidewalk. Police say Sandbulte went into the semi driver’s blind spot as the driver turned into the parking lot of a feed mill. The semi then collided with the bicycle.

5. On August 15, A 14-year-old bicyclist, Raeanna M. Reynolds of Muscatine was killed by a driver of a motor vehicle at 9 AM on Louisa County Road G44X, west of G Avenue. Alexander Cortes-Wolfe, 26, of Wapello was driving the 1999 Ford Taurus that hit Reynolds, according to the report.  Sunset was at 8:06 PM.

6.  Jeffery “Touie” Lutgen died October 15 at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City where he had been since the accident. He was 52. Lutgen was riding shortly after 10 p.m. Sept. 30 when his bicycle crashed in the area of Commercial Street and Highway 218, and he fell and hit his head, according to La Porte City Police Chief Larry Feaker.

7. Sylvia Clark-Hansen, 19, was killed when struck from behind by a motor vehicle on Friday, October 13 in the early morning hours on Hwy 38 in Wilton.  She was struck by a 36 year old driver.  Sylvia was on her way to work and was reported to have lights on at the time of the crash.



Eleven people lost their lives in fatal bicycle crashes in Iowa during 2016. Nine of the 2016 crashes involved motor vehicle collisions.  In five of the fatal crashes, motor vehicles struck the bicyclists from behind failing to safely pass the cyclists.

Two of the 11 crashes did not involve a motor vehicle.  A 35-year-old man was found dead after riding off a trail in Clive and a 10-year-old child hit a tree in Davenport.  

One crash was an adult male died while bicycling near Cherokee.  Circumstances were unclear in reports.

Three of the 11 crashes had contributing circumstances attributed to the bicyclist.  A child in Webster City rode a bicycle into the path of a motorcycle; a southeast Iowa bicyclist was struck at 9 pm and was reported to be wearing dark clothing and did not have lights or reflectors; and a 77-year-old Paulina man turned into the path of oncoming traffic.

The remaining five crashes were bicyclists struck from behind by motor vehicles:

Jolene Stork, 60, was struck behind on E-26 near Sycamore, Iowa by a 83-year-old Walter Wenck at 6:42 pm on April 22.

Bob Phillips, 69, was killed on June 8 at 11:57 am by a 50-year-old Todd Schriever on T64 near Nashua, Iowa.

Lisa Kuhn, 40, was killed at 9:30 am on June 25 while riding on Davis Ave. near West Liberty, Iowa by a 28-year-old Ryan McKillip.

Daniel Lehn, 58, was killed near North Liberty, Iowa on July 19 at 6:30 am on Hwy 965 by a 27-year-old Devin J. Disterhoft.

Wayne Ezell, 72, was killed near Glenwood, Iowa on Hwy 34 at 6:40 am on July 24 by a 34-year-old Robb Philippus.

2016 Full Details:

1. The Fort Dodge Messenger reports Jason Nolasco died Sunday in a Des Moines hospital after he was airlifted from Webster City. Police say the accident happened Sunday afternoon when the child unexpectedly rode out in front of the motorcycle.

2. The Iowa State Patrol reports Jolene Stork, 60 was killed while riding westbound on County Road E-26 near Sycamore, Iowa on April 22. It was reported a truck traveling in the same direction struck Stork from behind.

3. A man riding a bicycle outside Nashua has died after he was struck by a driver in a pickup truck. According to the Iowa State Patrol, the accident was in Floyd county at 300th Street and county road T64. Just before noon, Wednesday June 8, a 1999 Chevy pickup truck driven by 50-year-old was southbound on T64 when he collided with a southbound bicycle. The person on the bike, 69-year-old Robert Philips of Nashua was injured in the accident and taken by ambulance to the Floyd county hospital. He later died as a result of the collision.

4. Adam Grant Pritchard, 35, of Torquay, Devon, United Kingdom, was the man found dead along the Greenbelt Trail on June 23, 2016. Police were called to the 10300 Maddox Parkway about 2:15 pm., which is just south of the 7 Flags Event Center. Police said they believe it was an accident and do not suspect foul play. Police said Pritchard was found 20-30 feet down the creek bank, partially submerged, and still had his bike helmet on.

5. The Iowa State Patrol reports 40-year-old Lisa Kuhn was struck from behind near West Liberty on Davis Avenue on Saturday June 25, 2016.

6. Norman Needs died on a bicycle on a road outside of Cherokee. Details have not been released at this time.

7. Wendell Reiman, 66, of Burlington was riding north of U.S. 16 on June 1, when a vehicle, also northbound, struck him from behind shortly after 9 p.m. The rider was riding in the right lane of the highway, not wearing reflectors and had dark clothing on when he was struck.

8. Daniel Lehn, 58, was killed near North Liberty, Iowa on July 19 at 6:30 am on Hwy 965 by a 27-year-old Devin J. Disterhoft.

1. Iryna Shevchuk of Arnolds Park was killed in Spirit Lake on June 23.  Troopers say Shevchuk and another person were riding bicycles southbound on Highway 71 near 34th Street in Spirit Lake around midnight Tuesday. Authorities say Shevchuck was riding her bike in the traveled portion of the roadway, while the other bicyclist was traveling on the shoulder. Troopers say a southbound car collided with the rear of the bike Shevchuk was riding. Troopers say the driver of the car couldn’t see the bicyclists as they were wearing dark clothing and had no lights or reflectors on their bikes.

2.  Grace Harken was killed on Hwy 218 near Osage traveling east when struck by a car traveling east at 7:20 AM on July 29, 2015.

3. Wade Franck was killed when struck by a vehicle on Grand Avenue in Des Moines.  Police reports say the driver was positive for alcohol and was driving while barred.

4. David Ryder was killed from an overtaking crash as he was bicycling home from his work in the early morning hours of September 8th. The driver left the scene, but returned 45 minutes later. There were reports that no alcohol was involved in the crash, but investigators say it was raining heavily at the time of the crash. Ryder was reported to be wearing light colored clothing and had lights on his bicycle as required by law.


1.  A bicyclist died after being struck by a station wagon in Calhoun County on June 20, 2014.  Shawn Gosch, 47, of Onawa was riding west on Iowa Highway 7 west of Manson when a station wagon struck him from behind shortly after 8:30 a.m. Friday. Gosch was pronounced dead at Pocahontas Community Hospital. Gosch had been riding with another bicyclist, Jeffrey Gray, 49, of Onawa. The crash impacted Gray’s bicycle, and threw him into the north ditch.

2. 13 year old Timothy Jenks was riding his bike while training for a triathlon on Thursday when his tire grazed another cyclist. It’s said he overcorrected and as a result was struck and killed by an SUV on a rural highway in Story County.

3. 55-year-old Brian Guy Lauterbach, of Charles City, died after being hit by a car as he rode his bicycle Thursday night. Investigators say Lauterbach was eastbound on Highway 14 about five miles west of Charles City when he was hit about 8:30 p.m. Authorities say a 16-year-old boy from Rockford was driving the car that hit Lauterbach’s bicycle. Officials say Lauterbach was taken to Floyd County Hospital, where he died.

4. A man has died three days after crashing his bicycle on a recreational trail in the northeast Iowa city of Decorah. Dan Werner, 66, died Sunday, September 21, said Decorah Police Chief Bill Nixon. Werner was injured Thursday afternoon when he flipped over his bike handlebars. Nixon said Werner’s bicycle crashed after it made slight contact with a woman he was passing on the Trout Run Trail, the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier said.

5. Authorities say 62-year-old Sally Bell of Clear Lake was riding her bicycle west on 340th Street and the driver was driving his GMC flatbed truck north on Balsam Avenue when they met in the middle of the intersection. Bell was flown to Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa for treatment of her injuries. The accident occurred just after 10:30 am on November 20.



1.  A 58-year-old bicyclist Gerald O. Williams, of Lenox, died Saturday (6/23/13)  morning after being struck by a car while riding his bike on a rural road in Taylor County.  Authorities found the car, a 2009 Chevy Malibu, believed to be responsible for hitting Williams but have not made an arrest or determined who was driving.

2.  Paul Ladd, a retired Marine colonel from Boone, died on a county road around 7 a.m. June 24 after being struck by a car.

3.   Jonathan Ferguson, a Spencer, Iowa, bicyclist who collided with a truck was hospitalized with critical head injuries, police said. Spencer Police Chief Mark Lawson said the teen, 18, ran a stop sign and collided with the passenger side door of a utility truck at First Avenue West and West Eight Street about 10 a.m. Friday.  He was taken to a Spencer hospital with critical injuries, and then flown by helicopter to a hospital in Sioux Falls. His condition wasn’t immediately available Monday morning. Police say the teen’s bicycle didn’t have working brakes. The driver of the truck, 61, of Spencer, was not hurt. The driver hasn’t been charged.

4.  Luke Sudbrock, 27, died at Mercy Medical Center at 1:32 p.m. Tuesday, a hospital official said Wednesday night.  Sudbrock was riding his bicycle eastbound early Friday morning on Scott Avenue near 36th Street when he was struck in the rear by a car, police said.  The car’s 68-year-old driver came up over a small hill and tried to swerve to avoid Sudbrock, but he was unsuccessful. Sudbrock was riding in the travel portion of the road and was not wearing lights or reflectors when he was hit, officials said.


1.  67-year-old Edward Giedraitis was discovered Sunday morning and pronounced dead on the scene.  Dallas County authorities say Giedraitis was killed “sometime after 10 p.m.” Saturday, May 19.

2.  Matthew James Budde, 47  of Monona, IA was also traveling East on Country Road B45 on May 19. A driver in a pickup struck Budde from behind ejecting Budde into the ditch.


1. David Garrels, 58, of Wever was killed when the bicycle he was riding was struck from behind by a car on Highway 61 in Des Moines County, Iowa. The crash happened Wednesday, March 16, 2011 just before 6 p.m. Police say the bicycle was southbound on Highway 61 south of Rock Spring Road when it was struck by a southbound car.

2.  Vera Lucia Ribeiro-Sulentic, 48.  The crash happened at about 6:20 a.m. on Old Highway 20/160th Street, about two miles east of Dike. Ribeiro-Sulentic was riding her bike westbound when she was struck from behind be a westbound Jeep Liberty driven by 30-year-old Dustin Hughson of Grundy Center, according to the sheriff’s office.  She died at the scene.

3.  ”Railroad Randy” (Nomeland),  60, from Britt   IA      7/30/11 hobo from Minneapolis riding to Hobo Days; struck from behind by SUV on Hwy. 18 at 10:30PM; A Floyd man has been charged with operating while under the influence following a fatal SUV-bicycle accident Friday night near Britt.  Travis J. Thomas, 39, of Floyd, was the SUV driver who struck the bicyclist, Randy Nomeland, 60, of Minneapolis, around 10:30 p.m. on U.S. Highway 18 just west of Britt.

4.  Michael Alexander, 57, of Fort Madison, has died after being struck by a pickup near Montrose.  Alexander, 57, was riding his bike on the outside lane when a truck in the same lane struck him from behind.

5.  Darlene Cooper, 50, of Keokuk died after being struck by a vehicle near Montrose.  This was the second crash within a few days in the same area.



1.  October 6, 2010  Jason Lee Morris, 33, of Albany, Ore., pedaled eastbound on Iowa Highway 85 about three miles east of Montezuma at about noon. Truck driver Michael Jantzen, 51, of Tama, spotted the bicyclist and straddled the dotted center line to give Morris room, the report said.  The front passenger side tire on the truck failed and the truck jutted hard to the right. The truck hit Morris, entered the ditch and rolled over. Morris was killed. It was not immediately clear if Jantzen suffered injuries.

2.  Authorities in Waterloo are investigating a vehicle accident that left a bicyclist dead. Police say the accident happened around 10:45 p.m. on Friday, Sept 3rd in Waterloo. A vehicle struck a person riding a bike. The bicyclist was pronounced dead on the scene. The vehicle’s driver wasn’t injured. Police did not give further details, including the victim’s name.

3.  August 12, 2010  A bicyclist, Paul Estrem of Decorah, was struck and killed by a pickup truck in Winneshiek County. The bicyclist was crossing Conover Road near U.S. Highway 52 and Calmar when the rider was struck by the pickup. The crash occurred at about 4:20 p.m.

4.  August 2, 2010 Phillip Abodeely died in a single bicycle crash in Cedar Rapids.  Details are unknown.

5.  August 2, 2010 Susan M. DeSotel, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. She was 51. DeSotel was southbound on C Street SW around 6:30 p.m. Thursday when an oncoming pickup turned into her path. The crash occured on July 29 and Susan died on August 2nd.

6.  July 29, 2010 Stephen Briggs, 68, of Waverly was riding in a group on RAGBRAI on Thursday when he collided with another bicyclist and was thrown from his bike. Briggs was flown to Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City with a head injury. He died Friday at 3:35 p.m.

7.  July 10, 2010 Dallas County authorities confirm that a bicyclist has been killed in a collision with a motor vehicle west of Adel. Kim Lou Clayton, 55, of West Des Moines, was pronounced dead
at the scene. The accident happened around 5 o’clock Friday evening at the Raccoon River Valley Trail’s intersection with K Avenue. Dallas County authorities say Clayton was westbound when he
ran into the passenger side of an SUV on K Avenue. Authorities said Clayton failed to stop at the intersection. A stop sign is posted on the bike trail before the intersection.

8.  June 29, 2010 Authorities said a 12-year-old girl riding a bicycle died after she was hit by a pickup truck in Harrison County in western Iowa. The Iowa State Patrol said Amiee Marie Atwell of Little Sioux was hit Tuesday afternoon near Little Sioux. The patrol said the pickup was traveling south and the driver went into northbound lane to go around the child, who was riding south. Troopers said the girl apparently tried to get to other side of the road and was hit.

1.  August 30, 2009 Mark Grguich was killed in rural Warren County on G14. Mark was riding lawfully on the roadway and was killed by a hit and run driver in an overtaking crash. The driver has not been located.

2.  August 18, 2009 Mark Anderson was killed on Hwy 71 at 6:15 AM. Mark was traveling from his rural home to work as he had done for 5 years. Mark rode with flashing lights. No paved shoulder existed in the area he was riding. The driver was a 21 year old from Minnesota and claimed he did not see the bicyclist.

3.  July 29, 2009 A professor from Missouri was killed on the final day of RAGBRAI when he lost control on a downhill section of road. No other vehicles were involved.


1. April 4th 2008 Randy Van Zee, 56 killed while riding his bike. He was struck and killed instantly by a vehicle from behind as he was riding west into the setting sun near his home last evening. The Iowa State Patrol said the accident happened Friday at 7:17 p.m. in O’Brien County a half a mile west of L40 on County Road B14. The driver was westbound on County Road B-14 when it struck the rear of a bicycle driven by Randy Vanzee.

2.  June 17, 2008 Benjamin Rodriguez, 5, of Des Moines was hit and killed while riding his bike down a residential street on Tuesday, police said. The accident happened at SE 28th Street and Scott Avenue at 11:30 a.m. A bike, with training wheels attached, was still lying in the intersection more than an hour later. Police said he was hit by a tractor-trailer that was turning onto Scott Avenue from SE 28th St. His family lives on SE 27th Street. Police said the incident was accidental and no charged were filed on Tuesday.

3.  July 14, 2008 Rick Lind, 49, was killed late Friday (7/12/08) while riding a bike home from the Mason City office where he was working late. “He rode his bike everywhere,” Lind’s stepfather, Ken Anderson, said. While a student at Iowa State University, where he earned a business degree in management information systems, Lind sometimes rode his bicycle back and forth from Ames, his family said. “He said it was safest to ride at night” due to the slowing of traffic, his stepdaughter, Heather, 22, said. The collision took place at approximately 11:55 p.m. The pickup was driving westbound on Third Street Northwest, preparing to turn south on Washington Avenue. Lind was traveling east on Third Street. According to Mason City police, witness testimony suggests that Lind failed to stop at a stop sign and entered the intersection as Hulsing turned. Lind did not have lights on his bicycle and was wearing dark clothing, according to police.

4.  July 31, 2008 Todd Parsons Western Jr., 64, fell from his bike and struck his head after the bike left a lawn and went into a street construction site. The death appears to be an accident. A neighbor in the 1100 block of East Ridgeway Avenue found the Western’s body tangled in his bicycle in a construction zone that shut down the street, police said. Police said Western wasn’t wearing a bicycle helmet. It appears he rode into a yard to go around the construction scene but then entered the work area.

5.  August 14, 2008 James Basley, 83, rode his bike into the path of an oncoming car early Tuesday evening. The investigation determined that the driver took appropriate evasive action, but was unable to avoid the collision. She was cited for not having proof of insurance. Police say Basley was not wearing a helmet.

6.  August 31, 2008 Penny Vanous, 51, of Rowley died in a car-bicycle accident in Buchanan County. Her husband, Donald, 54, received minor injuries in the incident. The couple was westbound on bicycles on 290th Street shortly after 8 a.m. A westbound Buick Century driven by Ruby Kimber, 78, of Rowley, struck the cyclists from the rear, according to the sheriff’s office. Authorities believe Kimber didn’t see the couple. Weather or road conditions were apparently not a factor.

7.  October 2008, Douglas Kenny, 21, of West Burlington was killed as a driver hit him from the opposite direction. The driver claimed the sun was in his eyes, but witnesses said otherwise. The driver received a suspended 60-day jail sentence and probation, fined $2,000 and his driver’s license was suspended for 360 days.


  1. September 4, 2007  The Muscatine County Sheriff’s Department this morning is investigating a fatal hit-and-run accident that occurred Tuesday night north of Muscatine. At 9:49 p.m. Tuesday, the Sheriff’s Office was notified of an accident at 1648 N. Mulberry Road (County Road X-54), approximately three and one half miles north of Muscatine. The initial investigation indicates that an Hispanic male was southbound on the roadway at that location on a bicycle when he was struck from behind by an unknown motor vehicle. That vehicle apparently fled the scene.
  2. August 8, 2007 A hit-and-run near Woodward in Boone County has left one person dead. It happened on County Road R18, also known as L Avenue, two miles north of Woodward. The Dallas County Sheriff’s Office said Mark Snopek, 53, was riding northbound on R18 when he was hit from behind. They said Snopek died at the scene. At this point, the description of the vehicle that hit the man is not known.
  3. February 8, 2007 A man riding a bicycle on Des Moines’ south side is killed when he is hit by a car. The hit-and-run happened at about 10 a.m. near Southeast 14th Street and King Avenue. Lewandowski was southbound on his bicycle on Southeast 14th Street about 10:10 a.m. when he was hit from behind by the southbound van, police said.


  1.  Tina Marie Brown, 46, of 1441 Capitol Ave was riding her bike when she was hit from behind at about 11 p.m. Police said she was riding westbound on Park Avenue near the Hy-Vee on Southeast 14th Street. The vehicle left the scene in the 1500 block of East Park Avenue, police said. A passer-by found Brown lying in the street and called police at 11:01 p.m. No witnesses have come forward.
  2. A Dallas Center bicyclist was killed early Sunday after being hit by a car, the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office said. John Maxwell, 45, was riding his bike at 5:18 a.m. when he was struck by a car at County Road 16 and 270th Street, about two miles south of Dallas Center, according to the sheriff’s officer news release. Maxwell was pronounced dead at the scene.
  3. July 13, 2006 A Madrid, Iowa, man was killed while biking along a Boone County road.
    Investigators identified the man Thursday afternoon as 51-year-old William Perrier. Troopers said he was headed north on county Road R18 when the driver of an empty grain truck hit the cyclist where the road intersects with 300th Street.
  4. July 3, 2006 A bicyclist was killed near Marshalltown on Sunday afternoon when he was struck from behind by a car. Neither the bicyclist or the driver have been identified by the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office. Officials said the crash occurred about 2:30 p.m. on U.S. Highway 30 just east of Marshalltown. The bicyclist, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was heading west when they were struck.
