Bike Rodeo

Bicycle Rodeos are a fun and exciting way for kids to practice safely riding bicycles. In each rodeo station, kids learn traffic safety principles, predictable riding habits, and bicycle handling skills.  Bicycle rodeos are held in closed parking lots which are free of traffic.

The first station is a helmet and bicycle safety check. Kids must have safe and working equipment before participating.  The bike helmet fit station assures kids have a helmet the fits and is adjusted properly. If a bike shop mechanic is available, they can help with the bicycle safety check. Otherwise, an adult can inspect the bicycle for road worthiness.

There are many stations that you can use to simulate situations kids may encounter while riding. You can teach traffic safety and kids can learn to recognize stop signs and use hand signals. You can teach bike handling skills and kids can learn to ride in a straight line as well as steer their bike carefully.
You can also teach kids how to watch for opening car doors and how to cross driveways.

Most of all, you can teach kids that bicycling is fun.  Free bike rodeo guides are available at www.iowabikes.com from the Iowa DOT.
